1. What We Collect

Here's everything we collect, organized plainly:

Category What it is Why
Account info Email address, display name (optional), hashed password Create and secure your account
Writing content Chapters, characters, world-building, arcs, themes, storyboards, timelines Store and display your projects
Usage data Pages visited, features used, session duration, browser/device type, referrer URL Understand how the product is used; improve it
Technical data IP address, HTTP request logs, error reports Operate and secure the service; debug issues
Communications Emails you send to us Respond to support and feedback

We don't collect payment card data (processed directly by our payment provider) or government-issued IDs.

2. How We Use Your Data

To deliver the service

Your account information and writing content are used to operate Conscriva: authenticating you, storing your projects, syncing across sessions, and presenting your work back to you.

To improve the product

Aggregated, anonymized usage data helps us understand which features are valuable, where users get stuck, and what to build next. This is patterns like "50% of users visit Consistency Checker within a week" โ€” not reading your manuscripts.

To communicate with you

We use your email address for: account-related notifications (password resets, major policy changes), product updates (infrequent, only when meaningful), and responses to your support requests. You can opt out of product emails at any time.

To protect the service

Technical logs help us detect abuse, investigate security incidents, and maintain service reliability.

3. AI Features & Your Data

This section specifically covers how AI features interact with your writing content.

What happens when you run a consistency check

When you use the Consistency Checker or "What's Next?" Advisor, relevant portions of your project (characters, world rules, chapters, arcs) are assembled into a prompt and sent to an AI model for analysis. The response is returned to you. This is a transactional operation โ€” the data is processed in flight to generate the answer, then the transaction ends.

Not stored externally

Your writing content is not persisted in any AI provider's systems. We do not send content to AI providers in ways that allow them to retain or train on it. Our AI provider agreements include data processing terms that prohibit using customer data for model training.

No training on your manuscripts

Conscriva does not use your creative work to train, fine-tune, or improve AI models โ€” ours or anyone else's. Your unpublished manuscript is not a training corpus.

AI features are optional

All AI features in Conscriva require your explicit action. The consistency checker only runs when you click "Run Check." The advisor only generates suggestions when you request them. Nothing is processed automatically in the background without your knowledge.

4. Sharing & Third Parties

We do not sell your data

Conscriva does not sell, rent, or trade personal data or creative content to any third party. Full stop.

Service providers

We use a small number of trusted service providers to operate the service:

  • Database hosting โ€” stores your projects and account data
  • Application hosting โ€” runs the Conscriva service
  • AI processing โ€” processes consistency check and advisor requests (transactional only, see ยง3)
  • Payment processing โ€” handles subscription payments (we never see your card details)
  • Email delivery โ€” sends transactional account emails

These providers operate under contracts that limit how they can use your data and prohibit selling it.

Writers' Groups

If you join a Writers' Group and share chapters with that group, those chapters are visible to other group members. Group sharing is always a deliberate action โ€” nothing is shared automatically. You can revoke shared content by leaving the group or removing the shared chapter.

Legal requirements

We may disclose data if legally required to do so (e.g., in response to a valid court order or government request). We will notify you of such requests where legally permitted.

Business transfers

If Conscriva is acquired or its assets are transferred, user data may be part of that transaction. We'll notify you before data is transferred to a new entity, and you'll have the opportunity to delete your account.

5. Cookies & Analytics

Authentication cookies

We use a cookie to keep you logged in. This is strictly necessary for the application to work. You can't opt out of this cookie while using the app.

Analytics

We collect first-party analytics to understand how the product is used. This includes pages visited, features clicked, session duration, and referrer URLs. Analytics data is associated with your account when you're logged in, and with an anonymous session identifier when you're not.

We do not use third-party advertising trackers. We do not send usage data to ad networks.

Local storage

We use browser local storage to remember your preferences (like light/dark mode) and to keep you authenticated. This is not shared with third parties.

Opting out

You can disable cookies in your browser settings. Disabling cookies will log you out and prevent you from staying logged in. Analytics collection can be disabled by contacting us at hello@conscriva.com.

6. Data Retention

We keep your data for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account:

  • Writing content and project data is deleted within 30 days
  • Account information is deleted within 30 days
  • Aggregated, anonymized analytics data (not linked to you) may be retained indefinitely
  • Backup copies may persist for up to 90 days before being purged from backup rotation
  • Certain records (like billing history) may be retained as required by law

Server logs (IP addresses, request logs) are retained for 90 days for security purposes, then deleted.

7. Your Rights

You have the following rights over your data, regardless of where you live:

Access
Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
Export
Download your projects and writing content in a portable format from your account settings.
Correction
Update your account information at any time from your account settings.
Deletion
Delete your account and all associated data at any time. No questions asked.
Objection
Object to processing of your data for analytics purposes. Contact us at hello@conscriva.com.
Portability
Receive your data in a structured, machine-readable format. Use the export feature or contact us.

GDPR (EU/UK residents)

If you're in the EU or UK, you have additional rights under GDPR, including the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority. Our legal basis for processing your data is: contract performance (operating the service you signed up for), legitimate interests (security, analytics, product improvement), and consent (optional communications).

CCPA (California residents)

California residents have the right to know what personal data we collect, to request deletion, and to opt out of "sale" of personal information. We do not sell personal information, so the opt-out right does not apply in practice. To exercise access or deletion rights, contact hello@conscriva.com.

How to exercise your rights

Most rights can be exercised directly in your account settings. For requests that require our involvement, email hello@conscriva.com with subject "Privacy Request." We'll respond within 30 days.

8. Security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your data:

  • Data in transit is encrypted via TLS/HTTPS
  • Passwords are hashed using bcrypt โ€” we never store plaintext passwords
  • Database access is restricted to authenticated application connections
  • We review third-party providers for security practices before integrating them

No system is perfectly secure. If you discover a security vulnerability, please report it to hello@conscriva.com. We take these reports seriously.

In the event of a data breach affecting your personal data, we will notify you within 72 hours of becoming aware of it, as required by applicable law.

9. Children's Privacy

Conscriva is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If we become aware that we've collected data from a child under 13 without appropriate consent, we will delete it promptly.

Users between 13 and 18 may use Conscriva with parental consent, as noted in our Terms of Service.

10. International Data Transfers

Conscriva is operated from the United States. If you access the service from outside the US, your data will be transferred to and processed in the US.

For users in the EU/EEA or UK, data transfers are subject to appropriate safeguards. We rely on Standard Contractual Clauses with our service providers where required.

11. Changes to This Policy

When we make material changes to this Privacy Policy, we'll notify you by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Minor changes (clarifications, typo fixes) may be made without prior notice.

The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects when the current version was published. Continued use of the service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
